Abstract:
OGSA-DAI has attracted criticism from some quarters for being too slow. While it is undoubtedly true that OGSA-DAI is considerably slower than technologies such as JDBC for database access we do not see OGSA-DAI as directly competing with these technologies. OGSA-DAI allows clients to access data via web or grid services for projects for which such access is architecturally suitable. The OGSA-DAI team believe that is it the inherent overhead of web or grid services that is causing OGSA-DAI to be regarded as slow.
This project aims to investigate the above belief to evaluate the overhead of the web service or HTTP layer. The performance of OGSA-DAI on a variety of queries returning a variety of data sizes will be compared with that of:
- a web service operation that returns a simple value
- a web service operation that returns canned query results
- SQLServer's build in HTTP query mechanism and 'FOR XML' SQL extension to return data as XML
- any other HTTP-based data access technologies identifies
